The final parts of the Southbound artist puzzle are locked in and our three main stages are now a 57 piece completed picture. As they do each and every year, they hold spots for their own Stagebound competition, for triple j Unearthed and for The Seed, offering three up and coming artists the opportunity to showcase their wares on the main stages at Southbound. And now it’s time to reveal them!

The Seed winner is Victoria’s own singer songwriter extraordinaire Gossling, who has been showcasing her wares all over the country in recent times. Her catchy first single “I Was Young” has been burning the airwaves for nearly a year now and her recent pairing with 360 on “Boys Like You” has been huge! We look forward to seeing Gossling take to the stagein January.

Local lads Sonpsilo Circus battled it out in a highly competitive Stagebound competition a few weeks back, and as announced today on triple j, Arts Martial have won the coveted Unearthed spot.

And now to reveal another competition winner, this time for our Stage Naming Promo. Clever lad Jack Deveney has rather intellectually met Southbound’s instructions of summing up freedom and fun in the sun with friends, by suggesting “Sunny” and Share” for our two main stages.

After listening to a staggering 120+ entries, the four finalists for Southbound’s Stagebound competition have been determined!

Proudly supporting local WA talent, Southbound’s Stagebound competition gives one band the chance to open Southbound each year. Local, unsigned artists are encouraged to upload their electronic press kit to Sonicbids, showcasing their finest tracks and offerings. Four bands are then selected to battle it out in a live final, judged by a panel of industry professionals.

The Southbound team have yet more names to bring you from both near and far. This week, we’re pleased to announce, in alphabetical order, Alpine, Beirut, CANT, Drapht, The Grates, Regurgitator (performing “Unit” in full) and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs.

Melbournites Alpine tread a curious line that lands somewhere between Fleetwood Mac and The XX. As strange a marriage as that sounds, it’s probably the only fitting way to describe songs like their ubiquitous single “Heartlove” – with its jagged rhythm’s and staccato yet harmonic vocals. The track is taken from their recently released Zurich EP, a disc put out by influential Sydney label Ivy League Records. Read more..

The team at Southbound have decided to hit you with a bunch of names from around the world and our fair country to add to the ever-expanding line up. This week, we’re pleased to bring you, in alphabetical order, Aloe Blacc, Dan Deacon, Emma Louise, Jim Jones Revue, Josh Thomas, The Kooks, Lanie Lane, Metronomy, Missy Higgins and Pnau. Phew!

And now, we’re happy to present the ticketing options and prices for Southbound 2012. As we announced earlier this year, due to overwhelming demand, a decision was made to revert to the successful two-day, two-night format of previous years. As a result, the ticket prices for Southbound 2012 mirror this updated format. With 20 bands announced already, and more still to come, the ticket prices reflect excellent value for money. Adding to the already stellar announce recently, including headliners Arctic Monkeys and Fleet Foxes, the Southbound team are serving up more flavoursome treats in the form of Crystal Castles, Josh Pyke, Papa vs Pretty, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and the Wonderful World of DJ Yoda.

Back in Australia this summer are festival favourites Crystal Castles. This Canadian duo consisting of producer Ethan Kath and lyricist and vocalist Alice Glass are renown for their frenzied live shows and lo-fi home productions. Their most recent self-titled second album includes “Not In Love”, the mega hit featuring guest vocals from Robert Smith of The Cure. If you’ve been anywhere near a dance floor or a radio recently, you will have heard this banger of a tune along with other hits like “Celestica”, “Empathy” and “Baptism”. To experience Crystal Castles live is to be cast adrift in a vortex of deafening pain without a safety net – in a good way!

Back with a killer new single, “No One Wants A Lover”, Josh Pyke is becoming something of an institution in Australia’s musical landscape. In fact, such is his standing in this country, this modern day troubadour is just about ready to join the likes of Bernard Fanning and Paul Kelly as a master of the art of Australian song. His latest album, Only Sparrows, is due for release in late August. Recorded in New York, his third long player looks set to consolidate Josh Pyke as one of our finest and most consistent songwriters. Read more..

After months of holding the information in, the Southbound team just couldn’t wait any longer to give you a taste of what’s to come in January 2012. Sunset events will bring to you, in alphabetical order, Arctic Monkeys, Arj Barker, Fleet Foxes, The Jezabels and Tim Finn!

It’s hard to believe that Arctic Monkeys first came to us nearly six years ago now. Back then their thick accents, Sheffield swagger and tongue twisting pop gems gave them the fastest selling debut record in British chart history in Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. Since then, they’ve proceeded to rip out albums at a gathering pace, culminating with their latest effort Suck It And See. Singles such as “Don’t Sit Down Cause I’ve Moved Your
Chair” and “She’s Thunderstorms” have been getting serious airplay on triple j in recent months. Known for their incredible live show by discerning audiences worldwide, Southbound 2012 will mark only their third visit to WA.
